6 Best Places to Keep Cool in Austin this Summer

Austin locals know that our spring is like other people’s summers and our summers feel like other people’s ovens. This is why it is so crucial to keep cool when you are outside in the sweltering heat. Since we care about our Austin community so much, especially when it comes to beating the heat, we put together this list of some of the coolest and most unique places to make a splash in the greater Austin area.

Top Swim Spots in Austin

#1 Hamilton Pool

Possibly the single coolest natural feature in the Austin area, Hamilton Pool is formed beneath a 45 foot waterfall and features a grotto for visitors to catch some shade under. As with most of life’s greatest pleasures, it takes a bit of work to hike to pool, but once you’re there, you’ll be taking a dip in one of the most unique pools in the world. Don’t let this summer slip by without taking the trek to Hamilton Pool.

#2 Deep Eddy

Who wouldn’t want to take a dip in the oldest pool in Texas? Aside from its cool name, Deep Eddy is a historical landmark and a staple of the Colorado River and Austin. You won’t be able to dive off of it’s nearly century old 50ft diving board, but you can still enjoy the cooling relief of this man-made historical watering spot.

#3 Barton Springs Pool

This gorgeous pool is located right within Austin’s pride and joy – Zilker Park. Learn to swim, as Robert Redford did in his youth, in Barton Springs Pool, or just hang out in Zilker Park’s 358 acres.

#4 Lady Bird Lake

Another great place to beat the heat, Lady Bird Lake is a comprehensive summer hangout spot with boat, water bike and other aquatic vehicle rentals. Between rowing, hiking and splashing around, Lady Bird Lake is always a safe bet for quality aquatic fun in the summer.

#5 The Slab

Located just south of Kingsland in the Llano River, The Slab is a popular water destination for families because of its shallow water that is perfect for wading. There’s also a lazy river for those weekends where you just need to unwind. Come and lay out on the soft sands to soak up the sun, play games and gather with friends at The Slab this summer.

#6 Pedernales Falls State Park

Get a little bit of everything at this popular watering hole. With hiking, picnic areas, geocaching and plenty of swimming spots, this hill country destination is a must for Austin locals in the summer.
